Do I have to scan receipts?
No, you never have to scan a receipt. Receipt capture is there to save you typing if you want it, but the app works perfectly without attaching a single receipt.

Only three fields are ever required
When you add a transaction, the app asks for just the date, the amount, and a category (against the property or business it belongs to). A description and a receipt are always optional. You can record everything you owe tax on without a single receipt.
What receipts are for
Receipts are your own supporting evidence. If you do attach a photo or PDF, the app can read the vendor, date, and amount and suggest a category, which saves typing if you prefer to capture costs on the go. HMRC never receives your receipts: your submission carries category totals only.
Note: Receipt capture and scanning are available on both Free and MTD Lite. On Free, uploads and scans share one allowance of 5 a month. On MTD Lite they are unlimited.
If you would rather not scan
You can add entries by hand, or import a spreadsheet or bank export as a CSV, and never touch the receipt feature. Either way your records are kept in the app, ready for your quarterly updates. See I keep my own records for the quickest setup.
Tip: Even if you do not upload receipts here, keep your own copies of invoices and receipts somewhere safe. HMRC can ask to see the evidence behind your figures; how long to keep records is worth checking with HMRC or your accountant.
Frequently asked questions
Will my submission be rejected without receipts?
No. HMRC receives category totals, not your receipts. Receipts are your own supporting evidence, kept in case HMRC asks to see them.
Do receipts count towards a limit?
On the Free plan, uploading or scanning a receipt both draw on one shared monthly allowance (5 a month). MTD Lite removes the cap. Typing a transaction in by hand or importing a CSV never uses the receipt allowance.
