Account settings: profile, email, password, and deleting your account
This guide covers the everyday account tasks: editing your name and email (on your profile page), changing your password and deleting your account (in Settings), and adding a second income type (from the sidebar). It explains where each one lives, who can do it, and what to do if something goes wrong.

What you can manage in Settings
Settings is your account control panel. The tabs you see depend on your plan, so not everyone sees the same set:
- Tax (always shown): your tax profile, used for tax calculations and MTD eligibility.
- HMRC (always shown): your HMRC connection. See Connect your HMRC account.
- Security (always shown): change your password and delete your account.
- Billing (MTD Lite only): your subscription and payment details. See Upgrading and managing billing.
- Notifications (MTD Lite only): your reminder emails. See Notifications and reminders.
This guide focuses on the everyday account tasks, all available on both Free and MTD Lite. Two of them live outside the Settings tabs: your name and email are edited on your separate Profile page, and your income type is added from the sidebar. Your password and account deletion are on the Settings Security tab.
Where to find Settings
- Open Settings from the dashboard. The page heading is "Settings" with the subtitle "Manage your account settings and preferences".
- Use the tab rail to switch sections. The tab you are on is reflected in the address bar.
- Use the back link at the top to return to your dashboard.
Update your full name
- Open your Profile page and find the "Account Details" card.
- Edit the Full Name field. It needs to be between 2 and 100 characters.
- Click Save. Your name change applies immediately, no verification needed.
Change your email
Changing your email is a two-step process so that nobody can move your account to an address you do not control.
- On your Profile page, enter your new email address in the "Email Address" field and click Verify new email. It has to be a valid address, not already in use by another account, and different from your current one.
- A verification link is sent to the new address.
- Open that email and click the link. The change applies only once you confirm it there.
Note: Until you confirm, your old email stays in use. If you change your mind, you can cancel the pending change before it is confirmed.
Change your password
- Open the Security tab in Settings.
- Under "Change Password", enter your current password and your new password. (If your account was created with Google and has no password yet, this section is headed "Password" instead.)
- Click Change Password.
Changing your password here does not sign you out of your current session.
Switch your income type
Your income type controls whether the app tracks rental property, self-employment, or both. You choose it when you sign up, and you can add the other income type afterwards.
- In the sidebar, use the "Also self-employed?" prompt (if you started with rental property) or the "Also have rental income?" prompt (if you started with self-employment).
- Confirm in the "Enable Both Income Types" dialog. On Free you are prompted to upgrade first, because tracking both at once requires MTD Lite.
Important: You can track rental property or self-employment on any plan, including Free. Choosing "Both" requires MTD Lite: on the Free plan you can track property or self-employment, not both at once. For the full picture, see Choosing your income type.
There is no separate control to switch between the two single types: you choose one at signup, and the prompt above adds the second. Your existing records are always preserved.
Delete your account
Deleting your account is deferred and cancellable: after you confirm, there is a 14-day window before anything is removed.
- Open the Security tab and scroll to the "Danger Zone".
- Click Delete Account.
- Read the "Delete your account?" dialog. It lists what will be removed and flags any co-ownership or HMRC impact.
- Export your data first and tick the box to confirm you have. Keeping your own HMRC records is your responsibility, and we do not keep a copy for you.
- Enter your password to confirm it is you. (Accounts that sign in with Google skip this step.)
- Type DELETE into the confirmation box. The button stays disabled until every step is complete.
- Click Schedule deletion. Your account is scheduled for deletion in 14 days, and we email you a link to cancel.
A few things worth knowing before you do this:
- Nothing is deleted for 14 days, and you can cancel any time. Your account stays fully usable during the window. Cancel from the Security tab or the link in the email. If you did not request the deletion, use that link to stop it and secure your account.
- Export your records first, because deletion removes them. Keeping your own records for HMRC (at least 5 years after the filing deadline) is your responsibility as the taxpayer, and once deletion completes we do not keep a copy for you. We retain only a minimal record of the submissions we filed for you (as evidence of what was sent to HMRC) and our billing records.
- Co-owned properties are handled fairly. If you co-own a property, your share is redistributed to the remaining owners rather than removing the property for everyone.
- Deletion is blocked during a live HMRC submission. If any co-owned property has an HMRC submission in progress, you will see "Account deletion is temporarily blocked". Wait for that submission to finish, then try again.
Account deletion is available on all plans.
If something goes wrong
- The Delete Account button stays disabled. Make sure you have typed DELETE exactly (capital letters, no spaces). If it is still blocked, a co-owned property has an HMRC submission in progress, so wait for it to complete.
- You cannot switch to "Both". Both requires MTD Lite. On Free you are limited to one income source. Upgrade to MTD Lite to manage both.
- No Billing tab in Settings. The Billing tab only appears for MTD Lite subscribers. On Free, you upgrade from the "Choose Your Plan" page rather than from Settings. See Upgrading and managing billing.

Frequently asked questions
I changed my email but nothing happened. Why?
Changing your email is a two-step process. A verification link is sent to the new address, and the change only applies once you click that link. Until then your old email stays active, and you can cancel the pending change at any time.
Why is the Delete Account button greyed out?
The button stays disabled until you have ticked the export-confirmation box, entered your password (password accounts only), and typed DELETE exactly. Deletion is also temporarily blocked while a co-owned property has an HMRC submission in progress, so wait for that to finish and try again.
Will I lose everything if I delete my account?
Deleting your account is deferred and cancellable: after you confirm, there is a 14-day window before anything is removed, and we email you a link to cancel. Once it completes, your transactions, properties, submissions, and related records are permanently deleted. Export anything you want to keep first, because keeping your own records for HMRC (at least 5 years after the filing deadline) is your responsibility and we do not keep a copy for you.
Why can't I switch to Both income types?
Switching to Both requires MTD Lite. On the Free plan you can track property or self-employment, not both. Upgrade to MTD Lite and you can manage both together.
